Get out of London and go on Safari...

Written by Sophie Evans on Monday, 31st October 2016 - Places to go

Whilst we all love the hustle and bustle of the city and sunny weekends on the common with a cider, one of my favourite things to do on a weekend is to get out of London and breathe in some fresh country air where people aren't in a constant rush to get things done.

A few weeks back I got taken to Longleat Safari Park for the weekend. It is quite a long drive from London but definitely worth it, especially if you make a weekend out of it and stay overnight somewhere near. There are tonnes of things to do when you're there so you are definitely able to get your money's worth.

Whilst you're able to drive around in your own car on the safari, I'd recommend the Silver VIP Package. You're in one of the Jeeps with a maximum of 6 people so you basically have your our tour guide for the day and get to find out so much more information about the animals. You also get to drive right up close to the animals for the best view and experience (we literally had Giraffes licking our windows!) rather than stay on the driving path. You queue jump for feeding the animals such as the Giraffes and the Lorikeets and even get to feed the deer out of the car window!

If you do take your own car, be warned the monkeys are lethal. We saw them pulling window wipers off, breaking the window washer jets off cars and I even saw a car have it's trimming completely ripped off the top. Having said that, other cars didn't even get a monkey on them. It's definitely entertaining to go round in the Jeep knowing that any damage done isn't to your car!

There is also plenty to do on foot - the penguin enclosure was awesome because you actually got to go in with them, rather than at London Zoo when you can just see them in the water through the glass shield. You can hold snakes and tarantulas - naturally I gave them a miss. You can also look around Longleat House and the gardens.

If you go for the weekend, my recommendation of where to stay would be the Snooty Fox. It's a family run B&B with a really nice pub restaurant. The staff can't do enough for you and the bedroom's are really nicely finished! Alternatively, Center Parcs is very close to it so you could always go to Longleat for the day if you're already planning a trip to Center Parcs!
